With the best intentions, I joined the ‘100 Day Project’ earlier this year. I was going to work in my art journal every day for 100 days, or to be more precise, finish an art journal page per day. It started out well for a few weeks, and then I lost interest as I just didn’t always want to complete a page. I knew I could be flexible with the ‘rules’ and decide for myself what and how to do things, but I was disappointed in myself, nonetheless. A commitment of one hundred days is intimidating. My sweet spot seems to be a few weeks.
That’s when I came up with an idea. I have a list of habits I want to develop and break, things I want to try out, etc. Why not set up a challenge for myself for each? Almost like a mini-experiment where I get to document my experiences. To make it even more interesting, I’m doing 2 challenges at a time. One ‘action’ challenge where I have to make a genuine effort and dedicate time to doing something, and the second, a ‘non-action’ challenge, where I ‘simply’ have to stop doing something.
The idea is to keep doing 2 challenges at a time for as long as I have things to do / try out. My goal is to get a feeling for each and at the end of the 21 days, decide whether it’s something that has added value to my life or not. I see these 21 days as the ‘experimental’ stage, and I am going to be patient, flexible, and kind to myself during them. Hopefully, they will be a springboard for developing or breaking habits.
Some ideas I have for future challenges have to do with breathing, exercise, decluttering, communication, reading, non-judgment, letting go of the need to control, tapping, meditation, shadow work, studying, social media, etc.
I’m currently on ‘day 3’ of two such challenges: Mindful Skincare and Mindful Fasting, which I’ll document in posts on this blog.
